EDLD 5364 WEEK 5 BLOG- FINAL WEEK!

The reading detailed effort and its relationship to reinforcement. Effort is controlled by the individual, therefore is the most important factor when it comes to mental preparation. Teachers should teach students just how important effort is as well as ask students to track their effort and achievement ratios.  Students sometimes accept outside factors as reason for failing or not making the grade they wanted. It is critical that we as educators teach what is and why effort is so important to their success. Computer software and spreadsheets offer a great way for educators and students to track their efforts and success factors.
There are a variety of online web resources educators can use to enhance and improve student learning outcomes. Some of them include: Audacity, Google Earth, Moodle, Skype, Wordle, and Voki. Each of these respective web tools allow students and teachers to communicate and learn effectively and efficiently with technology. These programs allow students to complete assignment from home or school computers. Teacher feedback is instant and allows educators to see just what students are learning and what they need to improve upon.
When students merely sit behind a desk and read textbooks they are losing interest in what they are being taught. Today’s student has grown up with technology and therefore should see technology aspects in the classroom.  Students can learn about ancient history and languages through video games!  A video stated that their goal was to make learning so innovative students would not even know they are learning. This is the wave of the future and I believe how students want to learn. Technology and the use of video game learning are very informative and effective.
Students can watch videos of their teachers through email as well as email and chat with their fellow students online.  Clickers used in the classroom are a great source of student engagement and interest. Teachers can gain a wealth of knowledge of their own teaching practices from student feedback from the use of technology.  Students can interact with other students for collaboration with assignments or simple questions. The use of Smart boards greatly enhances the learning experience for both teacher and student. The future of education is in technology; we should embrace it and use it to our advantage.
Big Thinkers:  Schools will teach learners how to solve problems as well as solve them collaboratively. Video games are assessments.  Words in the manual are tools for problem solving in reading instructions for any game.  Games inspire people to further research areas or topics incorporated within the game.
The Good Play Project deals young people and ethics. The question asked is in dealing with technology what are ethics young people have. Once you enter the world of technology you are among millions and thus are not safe from unethical actions.  Digital media are not always used ethically, one must be careful when entering the technological world.  New challenges arise as technology grows and becomes more present in our lives.
Students can play video games and solve various problems during the game. When kids are writing or doing any project in which they selected a topic that they are interested, the results are that much more engaging.  When students feel a sense of accomplishment, it satisfies not only their learning needs but also those of the educator. Failure is a source of motivation; the next attempt will be that much better.

EDLD 5364 WEEK 4 BLOG

This week’s readings taught me about aspects associated with visual learning tools. In this new age of technology students are looking at videos and pictures to learn. This new way of learning keeps students engaged and excited about learning.  For students who are shy, videos may be the perfect way to keep their interest while learning about them. This could also be the “push” they need to enhance their social skills. There are a number of photo and video website resources educators can use in the classroom such as YouTube and Flickr.
Cooperative learning was another big topic in the readings. Cooperative learning allows students to work and learn in groups. The groups should be small in size as well as formed based on group members learning level. For the cooperative group to be successful they must be comprised of areas such as variety, small size, and appropriate classroom structure. Base groups are long term groups, meaning students are in these groups for a semester. There are vast computer software and multimedia outlets to assist with cooperative learning. The creating of group website is also a wonderful tool to enhance the co-op learning experience. Ideas, calendars, work, and other aspects can be shared on their websites.
Students should be given separate tests to test the knowledge of that particular student. The UDL’s are designed to administer tests and objectives to meet certain student’s needs, goals, and abilities.
The videos were very influential and gave great information about this week’s content.  It is important to educate the entire child. Social and emotional learning are critical components for our students.  The teachers’ role in this aspect is very important, the teachers will learn about themselves through the process.  Teachers’ help students develop and build upon these components. School design is also important for incorporating good social and communication skills can be built. Smaller environments are easier for social and emotional skills to be developed.  Project based learning is key to help students develop these skills. They challenge students and have students come together in groups to solve problems. It is very interactive and relative for students.
Project based learning allows students to work throughout the semester on a particular subject. Students were in groups and did hands on research to develop their knowledge on the subject.  Students said they enjoyed learning more when they were outside the classroom in their subject area of study. Students become managers of their own learning through project based learning.
With only pencil and paper only certain types of students will succeed. When technology is introduced into the classroom students can find their special type of learning with technology source and be encouraged to learn. Through learning with technology, students become teachers to those lacking certain technological knowledge.
High Tech High is very influential blending technology with learning. Students can only play computer games if they make the game! Students work on 1 project in two classes. They learn about cells and blood, create a picture of their findings, and then present their ideas to the class. The students’ work is posted in the school website, so not only the student can see their work but teachers can see their work as well as what they have learned throughout the school year.

EDLD 5364- my UDL experience

Creating my own UDL was a great experience. I used the textbooks and many internet sources in order to create a plan as well as use sources for my UDL. The lesson plan formation experience was something completely new for me; it makes me want to create something like a UDL for my college physical education students. The creation makes you really think about all types of students and the different capacities in which they learn.  I used many different websites to use as resources in my lesson plan, I believe this better connects with students and allows them to build upon their previous technology knowledge as well as further that knowledge.
Teaching with technology goes along way with this generation of student. It seems everyone wants do things online or with the newest gadget. We as educators need to understand how technology works and find ways to incorporate into the classroom to keep our students engaged and motivated.

reflection on EDLD 5364 WEEK 2 ASSIGNMENT

Mary's Reflection

Teacher Background:
Since our teacher has very limited knowledge of experience, they need to "brush up" on their technology skills and uses for the classroom.
The teacher should consult YouTube.com for helpful videos on using technology to enhance students educational needs. They could also consult with their school's IT department for information on new technology trends and how to incorporate them into the classroom. Community colleges as well as commercial stores such as Apple offer classes on using their technology and products, from there they could learn and improve their knowledge about using technology.
Student's Background:
30 students total- 10 are gifted and talented and are accustomed to individually using technology to learn, there is one blind student and well as one deaf student. There are 2 students who have severe learning disabilities. The other 18 students have low to high learning abilities.
Our or my job as given by the principal is to incorporate technology concepts into the classroom given the teacher and students respective backgrounds.
With the 10 students that are used to using technology- they must learn how to work in groups and with other students. The 2 students with severe learning disabilities will be a challenge- I do not have any experience with that avenue so I need my groups help in regards with helping them learn with technology. I also will need assistance with implementing programs for blind and deaf students. I would say to keep them with the group of students using sound from computers and other technological sources for the blind student and using visual aids from the computer or projector for the deaf student.
For the other students whose learning skills differ from low to high, I would suggest using computer and internet sources to introduce them to technology. Children need to learn how to type so I would use typing trainer software to help them learn and further their typing skills.
Everyone should start in the same place no matter their skill level; I feel this will keep the classroom as equals. Please help me out if you know of another strategy as my strong point is in physical education- I do want to learn more about the aspects of adaptive PE as well as other learning areas.
From watching the videos we all know that everyone learns different ways, so the teacher must keep that in mind. The teacher should plan on introducing many different ways of teaching skills. Technology is very prevalent with students these days so hopefully using technology will keep the students attention and allow them to learn more at a quicker pace.
From our readings there were many resources for teachers to develop and create rubrics and other learning devices for students. Many focused on using the computer and programs such as learning how to type. These are crucial for the teacher to implement into the classroom for the students to benefit.

EDLD 5364 WEEK 3

EDLD 5364 WEEK 3 POST:
The videos discussed just how integrated we are with technology, especially among our youth.  Our lives are so filled with technology, it is crucial for us to have a basic knowledge of technology. The media, from television to internet, uses technology non-stop.  It sometimes can be overwhelming to us. Schools are now using technology to introduce new ways of learning as well as keep up with students. When using technology in the classroom it is important to remember to use it where it will engage students, encourage students to be creative, empower students, and allow students to learn with self-direction. It is also essential that schools teach children how to stay safe on the internet; teachers must supervise students using the internet and make sure they are using it safely.
The digital youth portrait videos featuring Luis and Cameron both show how young people are using technology not just to benefit themselves but to make a difference in other people’s lives. Luis is constantly using technology such as the computer to stay in contact with friends and family. He also uses the internet to help his family pay bills online. Luis is involved in his school in afterschool programs to help younger students learn how to use technology by building robots.  The teachers believe that technology is a way to motivate students to achieve their goals; technology in essence allows students to “take over” their own learning.  Luis and the teachers believe that the use of technology allows everyone to see just what technology can do.
Cameron is a hockey player who uses technology to make videos of him practicing hockey shots. He is a visual learner, his teachers allow him to make videos of lessons taught in class. He then makes fun videos that present the material in a visual and creative viewpoint. Teachers should not be afraid to let the kids learn on their own using technology, it opens up new levels of learning for both parties.  In Cameron’s case he sometimes teaches his teachers how to use certain aspects of technology. We as educators should be able to let students teach us something, especially when it comes to something technological.
The top 10 tips for teaching with technology include aspects such as streaming video, music, teleconferencing, interactive exercises, and the use of social networks. Students can relate to all these approaches to teaching using technology. The use of social networks can speak volumes to students; it is a great way to engage students in team learning. After all, students already use most of this technology outlets so why not introduce them into the classroom and see what results come from it.
The readings introduced new avenues of learning using social networks. Social networks connect many people together to be social, but now educators can use social networks to help students learn. Social networks can engage students by creating small groups to work on projects, the students can post their own questions, teachers can use the network to stay connected to other teachers and view teaching software, and students can share their works online to others.  The reading states that teachers will usually do whatever it takes to help students learn, so by allowing technology and social networks to have a place in the classroom it shows just how much education is changing.  Providing feedback was another topic introduced through the readings. Feedback gives students a way to know just how well they are learning or performing certain skills. Whether the feedback is positive or negative, feedback speaks volumes for how a person learns. Feedback should be timely, corrective, and specific.  There are many wed resources for measuring student feedback such as clickers and word processing programs.  Educators can design software programs to find just about any kind of information about how their students are learning.  The formation of lesson plans was another great topic of interest throughout the readings.  The main components of creating effective lessons could be comprised of: what will students learn, what strategies will show evidence that the student is learning, and how will students demonstrate they have mastered what you are trying to teach them.
The CAST, UDL reads were great- they set us up great for this week’s assignment part 2. Universal Design for Learning understands that everyone learns differently and has different approaches to satisfy each learner’s unique needs.  We will be creating a book builder using ideas from the UDL approach.  UDL is set in three different components: recognition, affective, and strategic aspects.  Each has their own respective learning “outcome” or description.  These CAST/UDL readings will greatly influence our group project as well as allow us to gain new knowledge in composing lesson plans and books for students with all backgrounds of learning.
Discussion: “According to Harvard researcher John Hattie, who analyzed almost 8,000 studies on learning and instruction, feedback is ‘the most powerful single innovation that enhances achievement. The simplest prescription for improving education must be ‘dollops’ of feedback.”
This quote is extremely significant to every educator and student in the world.  Feedback means everything. Giving feedback should be timely, corrective (not destructive), as well as encouraging. When a student receives positive feedback the student is given a spectacular feeling of achievement and motivation to keep up their good work.  Feedback should not be given in a negative manner. When a student is corrected with negative feedback, such as yelling or derogatory remarks it does nothing but bring down the spirits of that student. When a student needs correcting the teacher should be positive at the same time make the point that the student needs to improve or improve a certain area. This can be done in a positive manner, this can then motivate the student to better themselves as well as build their morale.
Positive feedback goes a long way when it comes to student production. I know when I am told that I did a great job on a project that makes me feel special- it is a very mental aspect. So we must give our students positive feedback and encourage them to reach their goals and aspirations. Educators can give positive feedback by giving students a prize, such as candy or a sticker, for a correct answer or book report.  These small mementos both encourage as well as engage student success.  It is essentially the same as when we receive a raise in pay- we are rewarded for a job well done.

EDLD 5364 week two assignment

EDLD 5364 week two assignmentexternal image c.gif

The video:
The Brain Research states that everyone’s brain is different thus everyone has a different way of learning. Recognition, strategic, and affective networks are all aspects of the what, how, and why of learning and they describe our learn abilities. Recognition networks allow us to see associate letters and words with how a lesson is being presented. It essentially allows one to recognize what we must comprehend in order to truly learn what is being taught. Strategic networks allow us to plan and organize the information being shown to us. Our brains organize the information needed to write a paper or solve a math problem. Affective networks basically answer and show if students are interested or challenged by a particular topic.
Principles of Universal Design for Learning video details the brains three networks and explains how educators can meet those needs. With these three items comes the task of creating a basis on how to effectively and efficiently reach all three networks in their students. Each student is different and may or may not have a learning disability; therefore each student should have unique means of being taught. The educator must understand this and seek the understanding simply not to teach just as they have been, but too expand their learning and adapt it to meet the needs of each student.
The
Diversity of Learners video explains just how diverse our student body is and what we as educators can do to reach every student with their specific needs. There a number of learning disabilities and behavior issues that can create learning problems not only for that student, but the entire class may be affected. Teachers must be able to teach each student in a way that the student is comfortable learning. Simple enough, no one student is the same therefore there needs to be different ways of teaching.
The
Universal Design and Universal Design for Learning video describes new technology as well as states that due to our diverse student population things have been created to assist students with difficulty learning the “traditional” way. Items designed to help those with disabilities can also help those who are not disabled. Each student can benefit from the use of adaptive technology.
The readings focused on settings objectives, that is, ensuring your teaching is on track to help students learn what you intend for them to learn. The text book details some great ways to assist the educator in tools that will help them stay focused. Applications such as word processors and brainstorming programs can make sure teachers stay on track as well as allowing their students new and innovative ways of learning. Data collection tools and surveys are another idea to assist teachers with keeping on course with their learning objectives. There are a number of web based systems used to assist educators with creating rubrics as well as staying connected with their colleagues and students. From blogs to simple emails, the possibilities of education are endless when technology is incorporated.
A read from Technology-Enriched Classrooms: Effects on Students of Low Socioeconomic Status, pp. 389-409 was quite enjoyable. It studied children in classrooms with and without the use of technology such as computers. The study found that children exposed to technology and those taught with a teacher trained in technology scored higher on math components than those children who were taught without the use of technology in the classroom. Students who were able to use technology also were more likely to have higher self-esteem levels due to the fact that they were able to use the technology and make higher scores on tests. It makes sense, one always feels a greater sense of achievement when they are successful.
Another reading also brought some positive ideas to light among students using technology in the classroom. It was stated that students who were exposed to technology were able to learn more in less time due to computers and other technological resources. It was also found that students who used technology were more likely to enjoy their studies and attending school. The negatives come in the form of students becoming distracted from their work by the internet as well as computer games. Technology and computers are great for learning; however factors such as internet usage and gaming must be controlled.

Discussion: This week’s readings were very “real” and opened my mind to new ways of using technology. The quote that stood out to me the most in this week’s reading was “Research shows that when students are allowed to set some of their own learning goals, their motivation is higher than when they pursue only teacher-set goals” (Hom & Murphy, 1983). I firmly believe that everyone has their own way of learning. One can learn from many different aspects, but there is always one or two direct ways one can learn that they are comfortable and most efficient in. There is no one way of learning, period. Everyone learns a certain way, and then we factor in those children with special needs and other learning disabilities. Those children may have a certain way of learning and retaining information, it is the job of the teacher to research these other education outlets and incorporate them into the classroom. It just makes sense to me, if one is do anything for any reason they should have some sort of input. When their own input is made and made know, it makes achieving that goal that much more special.
With the use of technology in the classroom, students have many vehicles of learning. From my own experience, teacher –set goals are appropriate but if the student has their means of learning and motivation their minds and drive to reach their goals are optimized. Sometimes teacher have “one” style of teaching that does not respond well with their students. Given the opportunity to maximize their learning capability, students that are able to set some of their own educational goals will reach them and more.

EDLD 5364 week one assignment

EDLD 5364 week one assignment

This week of learning was very informative which allowed me to open my mind to different ways of learning as well as teaching with technology. The videos were great- I enjoyed learning about the learning theories. The Changing Nature of Knowledge video- Computers have dramatically changed the way we learn. “The network becomes the learning”, in saying this he is stating that learners become “attached/accustomed” to their learning devices and data bases. The way in which knowledge is presented models how the individuals learn. Because there are so many different technological vehicles in which we learn, knowledge isn’t strictly derived from one specific source. Knowledge can be found in two different ways, by external and internal neuro network. The internal method is essentially how our mind perceives information while externally is how we “perform” what we have learned and stored up through our internal network. It shows the connections we associate with our knowledge as well as other sources of intellect. The external method is a very controllable factor due the fact that we are able to control our actions much more than how we learn.

Building knowledge: constructivism in learning video- constructivism states that “You never learn anything from scratch.” One already has information and knowledge acquired in their brains, when one sees a “new” idea they simply build upon the new idea with what their minds have already retained. From there the possibilities are endless; one idea leads to another and so forth. Constructivists never see things only objectively, rather they seem them both objectively and subjectively. Everyone perceives information different; therefore each person has a unique style of learning and will not acquire the same information as one person in a particular setting. A teacher’s job should be to take what a student has already learned and help that student reach higher expectations and build upon their learned skills.

Cyborg Life: Kevin Warwick video- Kevin states that the future holds the ability to implant a chip in the brain that will improve one’s memory. He says that humans will want to progress and build upon this chip implanted in the brain. Kevin has implanted in his arm a chip connected to his nervous system- the chip connects to a computer allowing him to send neural signals to control aspects. This video detailed what body implants can do when implanted into the human body. Our brains can be “re-programmed” by these nervous system implants. The human race could be changed substantially through this cyborg race. This sounds like a science fiction movie but could be the future lifestyle for us humans!

The reading was also very beneficial to me enhancing my thought process about technology. Students are so accustomed to using technology that it just makes sense to incorporate technology into the classroom. Communication and collaboration between students and teachers are vital components to make technology work in education. The primary goal of using technology in the classroom is to keep students interested and focused on learning. For most students, learning with technology is more of a “traditional” learning environment. Blogs are excellent vehicles in which to engage teachers and students as well as keep in contact with their colleagues and fellow students. Blogs can be used for teachers to share information with their fellow teachers as well as research certain topics of interest to them. They can also be used to allow students to voice their opinions on various topics or homework assignments.
Technology is the wave of the future and we as educators must stay on top of the latest technology developments so that we may provide the best learning atmosphere possible for our students.
