Mighty Mud Dash, October 20, 2012- Sam Houston Race
Park in Houston, TX.
This was my first mud run or run anything like this!
I registered because a few friends were attending and asked me to join them.
The pictures from their website looked so fun- why not? The only negative in
this was that I did not fully “train” as I should have. I try to do 3 miles on
the elliptical each day of the week as well as some ab work but the mud run was
more than that! It was only 3 miles, but 3 miles of running, obstacles, mud,
and water. I was not prepared for the
mud run, but neither were my friends. We
knew we were in trouble but that did not seem to phase us. The run to the first
obstacle felt like it was a few miles- it may have just been nerves or anxiety
of what was to come. After the first few mud obstacles I felt like I weighed 20
pounds heavier with the accumulation of mud on my clothing and shoes! We then
were running alongside the Sam Houston Pkwy and cars were honking at us as we
ran/walked. Some of the obstacles were ropes for climbing, because we were at
the back of the pack the ropes were so wet and muddy that it was almost
impossible to climb. I made it up most of these but there were a few that I
unfortunately had to walk around. The muddy moguls were the hardest (possibly
most fun) part of the race. You basically slide into a huge mud/water filled
pit then from there climb out using a mud wall. Once you slide into the muddy
water you were covered with mud, it was blinding! As you can see from the
pictures, I could not see! I made it up 2 hills but had to walk around the
other 2 for times’ sake as well as saving my energy for the rest of the run. We
then made it out and were onto the next part, climbing a huge mud hill. Once up
the hill you were able to stand under sprinklers and wash off, only to have to
slide down through the mud again! The next few obstacles were crawling through
mud and scaling a few walls. Approaching the finish line was a sea of monkey
bars, wet and muddy monkey bars. I walked around those, needless to say. Then
the last obstacle between me and the finish line- a huge wall. It had very
small steps so it was a bear to climb. I had 3 people that I did not know who
helped/boosted me over- I was not going to walk around on the last challenge of
the day! I made it over and ran the finish line to receive my mighty mud dash
medal. At the finish line bananas and
water were in plentiful fashion for all the racers to enjoy. Of course many
pictures were taken by our friends as well as the race staff. We then had all the mud hosed off my local
firefighters using their trucks and hoses! It was quite an adventurous and muddy day! We
have already registered for the next mighty mud dash which is coming up in
April 2013. The next day I could barley dress me due to the soreness of the fun
I had enjoyed the day before. It took me about 4 days to fully recover from the
race but it was worth the pain! I know now to prepare for the race, due a tad
bit more training so I will not be in as much pain after!
